As Japan enters the rainy season in June, many people feel a bit gloomy with the constant drizzle and overcast skies. But this season also brings a unique kind of beauty—especially in the form of hydrangeas.

In Japan, hydrangeas (ajisai in Japanese) are considered one of the iconic seasonal symbols of early summer, and visiting temples or shrines to view them has become a beloved tradition. Here are 6 of the most stunning hydrangea spots in Tokyo and Kanagawa to brighten your rainy day outings.

🗼Tokyo Area

1. Hakusan Shrine (Bunkyo-ku)

Famous for its annual “Ajisai Festival,” Hakusan Shrine is home to over 3,000 hydrangea plants. It’s a charming local spot where you can enjoy both spiritual serenity and vibrant floral scenery.

I absolutely love Kamakura during hydrangea season! You should definitely give it a try.

Unlike shrines, many temples close around 5 PM, so I recommend starting your day early.

Also, near Kamakura there's a popular sightseeing spot called Enoshima. It’s a great idea to visit Kamakura and Enoshima as a set!

Enoshima has an aquarium, and if you cross the bridge to the island, you’ll find lots of souvenir shops and restaurants serving fresh local seafood. There’s even a shrine dedicated to love and matchmaking!

Look it up—you’ll love it! 🌸⛩️🐟

☔ A Symbol of the Rainy Season

Hydrangeas bloom in the rainy season and look especially beautiful when wet—glistening with raindrops. In Japan, they’ve become a beloved seasonal tradition, and going hydrangea-viewing has become a cultural activity unique to this time of year.

☔ What is a "Fūbutsushi" (風物詩)?

In Japanese culture, a fūbutsushi refers to a seasonal tradition, natural sight, or activity that captures the feeling of a specific time of year. For example:

  • Cherry blossoms in spring

  • Fireworks in summer

  • Red maple leaves in autumn

And of course, hydrangeas in the rain are a classic fūbutsushi of Japan’s early summer.

📷 Take a Rainy Day Adventure!

Even if the weather is gloomy, hydrangeas remind us that there’s quiet beauty to be found in the rain.Whether you’re snapping photos, enjoying a peaceful walk, or simply taking in the colors, visiting a hydrangea-filled temple or shrine can turn a rainy day into something magical.
